Working Moms Fuel their Souls

Sometimes being a business owner and mom wrapped into one can be draining.  We want to be present for our families, run a successful business and make time for ourselves too.  Well, I know I can speak for myself and probably these two rad moms when I say the best part of being an entrepreneur is the connections you can make.  When I say “connections” I’m not referring to it in a professional manner.  I mean the connection you can make with personalities.

Abigail Gedon of PWDR Beaute’ and I work together occasionally and we both shop at EmLeigh’s & Mama B’ in Marietta, Ohio.  We’ve both enjoyed interacting with shop owner, Emma Conley.  She’s always so upbeat and positive and is a new mom to a sweet little babe just like Abigail and myself.   Abigail and I had been discussing doing a creative project together and felt Emma would be the perfect person to collaborate with.  It was the perfect set-up;  Abigail and I get to use our creative crafts and Emma gets a little pampering and break from the stresses of her retail business. 87A75BEA-8EF8-4C91-BAC8-4D2885CAEF84

We made it official and asked Emma to be our model for a creative shoot to showcase our work and her product.  I think it’s safe to say we enjoyed our day together and I loved getting to work on a project like this with two peeps I adore.  I showed Abigail what my vision was for the clothing and told her to just use what she wanted and felt would coordinate well with the looks.  I later asked her how she prepares for a session with someone. “When I do make-up I don’t necessarily base it off season or trends.  I try to emphasize their own natural beauty.  When clients like Emma, who wear barely-there make-up sit down I try to play to their energy and eye color and an easy-to-tailor look that can be toned up or down based upon the time of day.”

The make-up turned out just perfect for the looks you’ll see below.  One of my favorite things about Emma’s shop is that I can count on finding something edgy to work with at an affordable price point.  I hope you enjoy these looks I put together and they inspire you.

You know I can’t resist mixing patterns in any way that I can.  I’m loving the snakeskin print clutch with the floral.  It works well with her shoes and helps tie it all in together. I also adore how you can wear this dress off-the-shoulder if you prefer.

I paired these shoes with this look because of the red accents and to coordinate with the red in the sweatshirt.

Well if you didn’t guess it already the “skirt” on the previous image is actually a dress!  Ta-da (lol). I loved this chunky silver necklace because it really makes a statement for both looks.  Emma is always wearing this gold necklace when I see her and I wanted to show that it’s okay to wear silver and gold together especially when you want to pair it with something that you treasure.

A modern grunge look anyone?  Yes, please!  I will forever be a grunge chick.  I loved adding color and textures with this one.  The corduroy pants were a beautiful shade of green and it works so well with the other neutral tones.  The mini-print adds some interest and helps tie in the beanie.  I finished off the look with these colorful statement earrings to show a way to add some glam to a grunge style.  It also adds some funk to it which I adore.  And how fun is this denim jacket?  I love that you can see the print of the shirt through the backside of the jacket.

All of these looks can be shopped at EmLeigh’s & Mama B’s (aside from the shoes and Emma’s gold necklace).  You can also find her on instagram @emleighsandmamabs.

A huge thank you to Emma and Abigail for collaborating on this fun project together!  I have one more look that I worked on with these ladies but saved it for a fun article that will be featured on Clutch MOV soon.  So if you aren’t familiar with this local online magazine make sure and follow them here and @clutchmov on instagram and facebook for anything and everything that’s happening local in the MOV.

PWDR Beaute: A Tropical Getaway

This past Saturday I had the luxury of being able to feature a recent client of mine, Abigail Gedon of PWDR Beaute.  For those of you that are not familiar with her work, you should be!  She has started a YouTube channel where she shares “motd” and make-up reviews.  She’s also one of the make-up artists for Hot Tomato Portrait Studio. That means I get to work alongside her during some of the shoots that I style.  You can also find her on facebook and instagram @pwdrbeaute.

So what does a styling session look like with me?  Abigail is going on a vacation to Mexico for a beach wedding and wanted to make sure she packed stylish, yet practical clothing as well as an appropriate dress to wear on a beach for the wedding.

I started out by going to her house so I could see what clothing she already had and then suggested what pieces she should invest in.  The only pieces I saw her missing were if she wanted to have an extra casual dress.  I recommended doing a light off-the-shoulder dress.  I then recommended another pair of sandals.

As you see in the above image of Abigail, she is wearing a mustard colored flowy maxi skirt with a printed crop top.  I loved pairing these two things together because of the brightness of the skirt and then tying in some brighter neutrals.  I also looked through her jewelry and found the perfect statement necklace that tied in the mustard skirt and provided more color to this look.  Some people are leary to mix in a busy necklace with a printed top, but this works perfectly!  This might not work with just any look, so you’ll have to reign in on what is too busy to you.  But because of how the colors stand out against this print, it works great.

We also went with a simple, yet colorful bracelet to help bring accent colors down closer to the skirt.  The look was then finished off with a pair of cognac colored sandals.

For another look, I paired this black crop top with her button-up striped skirt along with cognac colored sandals. A lot of people still follow these “fashion rules” that don’t exist anymore; mixing black and brown being one of them.  I LOVE the warmth the cognac brings to this outfit.

I also completed the look with a tortoise shell statement necklace to tie in the black and cognac.  Plus, think of all the handbags you see where they mix black and brown together and it looks simply fantastic!  We then stuck with a simple, yet slightly detailed bracelet.

This look was one that I didn’t put together entirely; just gave tips with what shoes to wear.  As I mentioned above I recommended her finding a light-weight off-the-shoulder dress and she picked out the PERFECT one!  Check out how beautiful that color is on her?!  She accessorized with a simple drop necklace and we added in the handbag to finish off this simple, yet chic outfit!

Lastly, this is the dress we chose to have her wear for the beach wedding.  Since it is going to be on the sand, we knew she had to have a practical show so we went with a metallic gold gladiator sandal.  Clearly, purple is Abigail’s color!  Look how fabulous she looks in it.  And her make-up compliments with it so nicely.

This dress still had the tags on it because she ordered it online and didn’t realize how high the slit was.  I must say I am all about being daring, especially on vacation with a beach setting but this slit was absolutely too high.  I am a “fixer” by nature so I couldn’t let it go because I hated for her to not wear it because of the slit.  I stitched it up just enough so she felt comfortable and it worked out great!  She’s wearing the same drop necklace as the previous look.  Which brings me to another point; don’t be afraid to recycle jewelry when on vacation, it saves room and tangled messes!

If you’re needing help with any styling tips, or packing for a getaway I would love to assist.  We can go shopping together or I can use what clothing you already have!  Heck, we can mix the two together.  Message me for any questions.  Don’t forget to check out her social media and you can visit Hot Tomato’s site for a session and we can assist with your dream shoot!
