Styling a Family Photo

Today was a perfect day in downtown Marietta, Ohio. My little fam and I spent time eating lunch at one of our favorite spots, The Galley. Afterwards we took a stroll downtown and visited some of the local shops.  But I’m writing to share a tip when it comes to pairing outfits together for a family photo. Now, unfortunately my husband was on the other side of the camera but I can show how I paired my daughter’s outfit with mine.

A lot of people tend to go super matchy because they aren’t quite sure what else to wear. If you’ve been following me on this journey you know that I love mixing patterns so what better time to do so than in a photograph! I chose a striped maxi dress from Target for my look which is always a great neutral pattern. I had Harper wear a more solid color similar to the color in my maxi dress and we both have a ruffle. Her print is very miniature and playful for a little one which makes this work perfectly (her dress is from Target as well).

I have to take a moment and show a close-up of the Mother’s Day present my husband got me this year which is a buffalo tooth necklace by Lynne and Lucille from Wit & Whimzy (one of my favorite jewelry designers).

Harper chose her own shoes today. This was a proud mama bear moment because I suggested her polka dot sneakers because I thought she’d want to wear her fluorescent light-up sketchers lol. Girlfriend surprised me and said “what about the ones with the bows?!” Done and done. She’s got an eye already :).

Next time you go to coordinate outfits for a family photo or a couples photoshoot think outside the box so you can be yourself but incorporate a cohesive look with your photo partner. Need help? Message me 🙂

Top Shop and Drop It

I love when spring fashion arrives in stores. All of the bright colors and sense of ahh, warm weather ahead. Green is one of my favorite colors. It brings a sense of cheer to my soul. It reminds me of the lovely smell of fresh cut grass and the leaves on the trees.

I obtained this vibrant floral top from Target. The funny thing is, here I just shared how much I love the color green, yet don’t own a lot of it in my closet.

What I loved most about this top is the surprising versatility. Here I am wearing it with a favorite pair of denim I recently purchased on a trip to Chicago. I like to tuck the front of my flowy tops into my pants to give it a little more interest.

What I loved most about this denim and what made it so special is that it was:

1. A simple way of showing skin to feel a little sexy while the details in the cuff were a little more raw. I loved the moto style of them as well.

2. I found them at Top Shop and I had never been inside this store. Needless to say I was very excited because I have always drooled over their clothing online. I don’t purchase a lot of clothing online because I want to try things on so this was a major treat for me.

The second look I produced with this top was pairing it with one of my favorite leather skirts from Macy’s. When I lived in Columbus I frequented Macy’s sale rack on my lunch breaks and this was one of my finds! I love that this look creates a little more drama.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably notice that I love any type of leather type look. The psychology behind that, in my mind, is that I am not a demanding or overly serious person by nature. Wearing styles like this is my way of showing that I CAN have a more serious and domineering side when I want to. Yet, another thing I love about fashion. You can portray a certain personality just through the clothes you wear.

What trend or style makes you feel powerful? As always, I’d love to hear from you 🙂

Style on the Go

This coming weekend is going to be an epic weekend getaway!  Why, you ask?  I get to spend it with two of my oldest friends, Christy and Allyson.  My next blog post will go into the history of us and how we became friends. Plus, I’ll have the opportunity to style and take photos of them; a little pampering for the besties.

I know this trip is going to be a little more relaxing and not so much what we would’ve done when we were in our twenties, so I decided to share a look that I would wear while we lollygag in the city. Make sure to check out the next blog post to see what else I wore for the weekend getaway.

This lightweight jacket and flats from Target are a must in San Francisco for walking around the city.  This look wouldn’t be complete without my arrowhead necklace from Twisted Sisters Boutique in downtown Marietta, Ohio.

I loved the idea of wearing tan with black and white stripes because it is not always the obvious choice.  It helps bring contrast and interest to the look.  Same with my tan, suede flats.  I could’ve easily gone with the black flats but wanted to mix it up.  What’s your favorite thing to pair with stripes?
